Harry Potter Creative Team Honored By ADG Awards

Several news sites including Variety and The Leaky Cauldron are reporting that the creative team behind Harry Potter, including recent producer Jo Rowling, are to be honoured with an award for ‘Outstanding Contribution to Cinematic Imagery’. Whilst this hasn’t been officially confirmed yet by ADG we assume it’s genuine, as the ADG’s president is quoted as giving reasons for the HP team winning.

The awards will take place at the Beverley Hilton on 4th February next year; we don’t yet know whether Jo or any other members of the team will be attending. Fingers crossed Jo is!

More Details of Jo & Dan’s Interview

Entertainment Weekly have, it seems, had a sneaky look at the interview between Jo Rowling & Daniel Radcliffe which accompanies the Deathly Hallows Part 2 Blu-Ray. As well as the clips we’ve already seen, the article mentions Jo talking about Hagrid, Lupin and McGonagall, and Dan Rad talking about wandlore (plus ‘much more’).

We’re so looking forward to having new footage of Jo on our screens!

No Sale At Auction For Jo’s Boots

A while ago we reported that a pair of Jo Rowling’s boots, which she sent to an American fan for a school project years ago, would be going up for auction. The auction ended this afternoon with no sale, presumably because the reserve was not met. At the last check, the bidding was at $1200… So, does anyone have more than that lying around to make another offer?

Real Life ‘Wizarding World of Harry Potter’ Class

This just in; Muggle Studies will now be held in Muggle Universities! The magic really never ends!

Forget Platform 9 3/4 — “Harry Potter in America,” a new American Studies course for Spring 2012, is a new way for students to delve into the world of Harry Potter.

The course will explore the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling — which has sold more than 450 million copies and has been translated into 67 different languages — in the United States. The course will put an emphasis on the books’ impact on children across the nation.

Associate Professor in the Institute of Liberal Arts Catherine Ross Nickerson, who will be teaching the class, wrote in an email to the Wheel that she established a course on this topic because she realized that “students often talk about the experience of reading books and seeing the films as something that shaped their childhood.”

In addition to looking at the books and movies in the context of children’s literature, the class “will examine … censorship based on religious objections, fan fiction, the Orlando theme park and Muggle Quidditch,” according to the course atlas.

Nickerson emphasized that the course will be reading and writing intensive, adding that students will be expected to research secondary sources because there is now an abundance of scholarly work pertaining to the cultural interpretation of the series.

Students will also be required to reread the entire Harry Potter series in order to analyze the stories and find deeper meanings within the context, she explained.

A large part of the course will center around class discussions, she said.
While the class will not watch each of the Harry Potter movies, Nickerson wrote that she wants to focus on what decisions filmmakers made.

Nickerson wrote that she hopes students will “learn that children’s literature is by no means simple, [and] fiction is a potent vehicle for transmitting values and norms, since the stories play out in the theater of the mind.”

If the course goes well, she said, she hopes to teach it again in the future.
College freshman Jacqueline Adadi, who said she wishes to enroll in the course, mentioned that it would be the perfect way to fulfill a Continuing Writing Requirement (WRT).

“It would be fun reading Harry Potter for homework,” she said.

Jo’s Foreword for ‘Dear Me: A Letter to My Sixteen-Year-Old Self’

As you may remember, Jo has penned the foreword for a book called ‘Dear Me: A Letter to My Sixteen-Year-Old Self’ by Joseph Galliano. USA Today have made the foreword available and it can be read here:

This is an extraordinary little book, based on a simple but wonderful idea: What would you say to yourself if you came face-to-face with the sixteen-year-old you? One of the many things that delighted and touched me as I read the letters that follow is the commonality of our human experience. Nearly everyone who wrote, whether their letter is jolly or poignant, seems to have looked back on their younger selves with compassion, remembering how vulnerable and dangerous an age sixteen is, for all the fun and freedom it is supposed to entail.

The overwhelming message of this body of letters seems to be: Be yourself. Be easier on yourself. Become yourself, as fully as possible.

Attempting to isolate those life lessons I could pass back to the girl I used to be was a truly illuminating exercise. It made me look at my seventeen-year-old daughter and remember, in a more powerful way than ever before, just how raw and vivid life is for her, in a way that it has been only intermittently for me as an adult. I would not go back to sixteen for anything you could give me, and yet I still recognize that she has something I have lost along the way—something I had to lose, to stay sane.

You might have picked up this book out of interest in some of the fascinating people who have contributed. I don’t think you will be disappointed. The great thing about these letters is that they are extraordinarily revealing, whether short, long, full of practical advice or metaphysical musings.

Whatever your motives in buying this book, thank you. One dollar a copy will benefit Doctors Without Borders.

Finally, let me urge you to use the blank pages at the end of the book to write your own letter to yourself, aged sixteen. I think you’ll find it just as thought-provoking and worthwhile as we all did.

Jo has also contributed a letter to the book, which will be released on October 25th. We’re really looking forward to reading Jo’s letter!
