Hidden in Harry Potter are traces of ancient myths, legends and some very interesting facts that lie within the storyline! Here are some of those myths, legends and facts.


King's Cross Station:
Each of Harry's school years started and ends at this very place. It is where Platform 9 3/4 is said to be and where the Hogwarts Express said to be is waiting. King's Cross holds a special place in Jo's heart. It is the place where her parents first met and the very place where the adventures of Harry Potter began. Jo imagined the boy who lived while on a train ride 17 years ago.


Hermione:
The name of Harry's smart sidekick, Hermione comes from the Greek god of communication, Hermes. The name Hermione is also found in a Shakespeare's story, A Winter's Tale. In the story Hermione is the queen of Sicily. The story goes that the queen went into hiding because of the king's jealousy. Later, the king goes looking for the queen. He finds a statue of the queen and to his surprise, realizes that the statue is the queen herself! This is why in Chamber of Secrets, Hermione is turned to stone.


Dursley:
The name of Harry's nasty stepfamily, Dursley comes from an English village just a few miles from the place Jo was born. "Just say the word to yourself. Doesn't it sound dull and forbidding?" Jo said while recalling the place.


Edinburgh:
As most of you already know, Edinburgh is where Jo and her family currently live. It was also within Edinburgh, that she created Harry's world. This explains her decision of locating Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in Scotland.


Nagini:
Voldemort's snake, Nagini gets it's name from the nage snake god in Buddhism and Hinduism. Female nages are known as Nagini. Nages are sometimes said to be human from head to waist but snake from waist down. Other times they are shown with having many heads.


The Patil Twins:
The Patil twins, Parvati and Padma who belong to the house of Gryffindor, names weren't chosen at random. Parvati gets her name from the Hindu goddess, Parvati. Her sister, Padma's name means "Lotus flower" in Sanskrit.


Gryffindor:
Home of the brave, daring, nerving, and chivalry, Gryffindor is set apart from all the other houses at Hogwarts. It's name French for "golden griffin". Griffins are said to have the body of a lion and eagle mixed together. They are known for there great courage.


Phoenix:
The legendry Phoenix originated in ancient Egypt, where it was known as the benu. "Phoenix" is a Greek word, through the word's connection to the magical bird is unknown. There are different versions of the life of the Phoenix. Although in every version one thing remains the same, the Phoenix is said to die in a fire, after which a new Phoenix is born from the ashes just as Dumbledore's Phoenix, Fawkes did in Chamber of Secrets. The Phoenix symbolizes immortality.


Remus Lupin:
The name of this friend and werewolf has a very special meaning. Lupus is Latin for "wolf". Remus comes from the Greek myth of Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome. The myth says that as children, Romulus and Remus were abandoned in the woods, left to die then along came a wolf who saves the two young boys. Today, wolfs can be seen through out Italy. For example the phase for good luck in Italian, bocca al lupo literally means "in the mouth of the wolf".


Nicolas Flamel:
The creator of the Philosopher's Stone, Nicolas Flamel was an actual living person who lived in Paris in the late 1300s and early 1400s. He was a known alchemist and was said to creator a stone with power such as the one in Philosopher's Stone.
