Harry Potter has helped many people with the lemons life threw at them. Whither helping to give a child an escape from their illness or teaching life lessons, Harry has changed the lives of many. Below are some of the heartfelt stories of those whom J.K. Rowling and Harry have helped.
Natalie McDonald: Natalie was a huge Potter fan who suffered from leukemia. Harry gave her an escape from her illness. A family friend, Anne Kidder contacted Bloombury with the hope of getting some sort of reply from Jo. Bloombury after being touched by Anne's letter, sent it to Jo. Anne's letter arrived at Jo's house the day after she had left for Spain. When Jo returned home, the first thing she did was read the letter. She was touched and saddened by her young fan and called Anne. "I had the bad feeling that I was too late," Jo told Maclean's. Anne, however was not home. She wrote a long email to Natalie and her mother, Valerie which contained the plot for the unpublished, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. The email arrived on August 4,1999. Sadly, Natalie pasted away on the 3rd. Out of respect for the young fan, Jo created a scene in Goblet of Fire in which Natalie is sorted into the house of Gryffindor (page 159). Steven: Steven became a massive Potter fan after Harry gave him a little "Pick me up" during his eight-week stay at Great Ormond Street Hospital. He has had over nine operations to correct his clubfeet and used Harry to stay positive during his recovery. Natalie Jacobsen: The 18-year-old from Oregon wrote her own versions of Order of the Phoenix and Half-Blood Prince after Harry helped her get inspirited to write. Below is a picture of the two books.
Tyler Walton: The leukemia survivor got hooked on Harry while in the hospital battling the disease. "Harry Potter helped me get through some really hard and scary times. I sometimes think of Harry Potter and me as being kind of alike. He was forced into situations he couldn't control, and had to face an enemy that he didn't know if he could beat. Harry Potter helped me to realize that with the love and support of the people around me, I could get better." He wrote in the Scholastic essay contest "How Harry Potter Changed My Life". Tyler became one out of ten national winners. Still to this day he is a huge Potter fan. Daniel Boyce: The brother of an autism sister, Daniel connected to the storyline of Harry. He was one of the 10 winners of the Scholastic essay contest "How Harry Potter Changed My Life". He even dressed up as Harry one Halloween. In his essay he explains how it is living with a sister with autism. While his sister was getting speech therapy, Daniel was forced to stay in the waiting room. It was during this time that he read the adventures of Harry Potter. David Dawson: David found similarities between him and Harry. Like the fact that both him and Harry shared the feeling of "broken hearts" that comes from the death of a mother. He was 14 at the time of winning the Scholastic essay contest "How Harry Potter Changed My Life". Marty Cain: Marty will never forget the day his brother Alex read Harry Potter by himself. Alex could only read easy books but with the helps of Harry and a caring brother he started reading hard books such as Harry Potter. Marty will never forget what Harry gave his brother and wrote about it for the Scholastic essay contest "How Harry Potter Changed My Life" and won. Brittany Hawkrigg: After a massive stroke, Brittany's father was left without mobility on his left side. This affected Brittany very much. She turned to Harry for help. She was one out of ten winners of the Scholastic essay contest "How Harry Potter Changed My Life. Breeze Gardner: Breeze's mother who has MS was confined to a wheelchair as her MS worsened. She wrote to Jo requesting an autograph copy of Half-Blood Prince. She received the copy in the mail shortly after. Harry and Jo have been a big part in her life. Tirzah: "Harry came to my life at the perfect time. I was a freshman in high school, in a small town where there was never much to do, except get into trouble. One night, a good friend and I decided to see The Scorcer's Stone in the theaters. I did not know much about the movie, or the book. I decided to go along, only because there was not much else to do. During the movie, I was in total awe. Afterwards, I learned more about the books, and the writer and decided then to begin reading the series. To my surprise, the books were more amazing than the movie. That was the time I became OBSESSED with Harry. I would stay home saturday nights and just read. Harry was the reason I began reading books for entertainment. I have always been interested in fantasy, but for Harry, it was more about life. That's what drew me in to the first book. Here's a boy that is out of place in society, and does not have many friends. He feels, and knows he is different, but he is not quite sure why. This was exactly how I felt at the time I began to read theses books. As you know, Harry finds out why he is different, because he is very special and has powers he did not even knew he had. This inspired me to not care about what other people think, and believe in myself. As I read the other books, I turned into a Harry Potter nerd. I love every book, and can not get enough. I also love the movies, and went to three premieres, dressed up as Hermonie Granger. My interest in Harry Potter has led me to meet new friends, and feel a part of something great. I am excited for the seventh book release, but I will definatly be sad when it is all over. Harry was more to me than just a book, or a movie, Harry has changed my life. I am impressed by Rowling's imagination and thank her for her hard work. I am so glad I had a chance to be apart of the Harry Potter experience, and I feel sorry for anyone that had not given Harry a chance." This is word for word what Tirzah wrote in the Barnes & Noble Book Club. Sarah: "Dec. 15, 2002 my mom was murdered by my step-dad....(x-step-dad). I was about ready to kill myself, just to see her again. I didn't really care about the rest of my family and friends (grief can do that to a person) so I didn't care if I left them by dying. I was already into Harry Potter, so I started reading the books over and over and over and over again. I've read the first one 58 times, no joke, to give you a clue on how many times I read them all....anyway, then I became so hooked I just couldn't put them down. I found fanfiction websites and started writing fanfics about Harry Potter. I loved it, and that's the sole reason I didn't kill myself. That's why I'm so obsessed with fanfics and such....this story is kinda weird, but it's all true. I just wanted to get this out into the world...thanks Jo!" This is word for word what Sarah wrote in The Snitch Forums. Our hearts go out to all of those who have been helped by Harry and Jo. If you to were helped by Harry and/or Jo, please send us your story and we will add you to this page. |
