These kind of story touches many of us, so we wanted to share this story with you all.

I met one of those truly inspiring people last fall, and she prompted me to cross the normal line of neutrality and take a small step to advocate on her behalf.

I featured this woman, Dianne Rhein of Eau Claire, in a story last fall because she is a huge Harry Potter fan who also is dealing with terminal cancer. The story described how Rhein draws strength from the fictional boy wizard’s bravery in the face of adversity and from the strong bond between parents and children depicted throughout author J.K. Rowling’s seven-book series.

Rhein, 57, also talked about how important it was to her to share the love of all things Potter – from midnight release parties for the books to movie premieres to a family trip last year to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal’s Islands of Adventure theme park in Orlando, Fla. – with her daughters, Sally and Emma.

One of the nifty things Rhein does is maintain a bucket list, which she refers to as “Dianne’s Amazing Future Adventures List,” in which she spells out what she wants to do with the time she has left. Many of them focus on creating lasting memories with her daughters.

One of the entries Rhein mentioned, making contact with Rowling, stuck in my mind for months after our interview. Finally, in May, I decided maybe I could do something – power of the press, you know – to help Rhein cross one item off her list.

So I looked up Rowling’s publishers in the United States and the United Kingdom and sent letters, along with copies of my article, to the famous author at both addresses, suggesting that this loyal but very ill admirer in Eau Claire, Wis., USA, would be touched beyond words if Rowling could in any way reach out to her at this difficult time. I figured the chances were slim, but it was worth a try.

I acknowledged that Rowling has many incredibly devoted fans but tried to show that Rhein stands out from the crowd, stating: “What makes Dianne special in regards to Harry Potter is her immersion in the books (the audio books gave her comfort between rounds of chemotherapy), her eagerness to apply the life lessons in the books to her own life and her desire to make her shared experience of Harry Potter with her daughters part of their family legacy after she is gone. A bright, thoughtful and thoroughly sweet woman who could in another life be a teacher at Hogwarts (a school in the books for young people with magical powers), Dianne calls it a conscious effort to create memories.”

Then I waited … and will admit to being disappointed when neither Rhein nor I got a response.

Finally, just recently, I was surprised and thrilled to get a call from Rhein saying a letter had arrived at her house from Scotland.

“I was feeling weary with cancer treatment side effects as I headed for my mailbox but got very excited when I saw the Royal Mail Scotland postage stamp as I knew it must be J.K. Rowling!” Rhein told me via Facebook. “I called Emma and Sally right away, and they could not guess who would be writing me from Scotland. They screamed in excitement when I told them.”
Sure enough, it was a message from Rowling and included what appeared to be an autographed postcard depicting Harry Potter and the Hogwarts Express (the train that carries young wizards and witches to their special school). It also contained some personal information about the author, a sheet of answers to frequently asked questions and a signed, customized letter in which Rowling acknowledges my letter and says Rhein sounds like “a very special person.” The letterhead depicts a sketch of an owl and says “BY OWL POST,” which all Potter fans will get a hoot out of because they know that’s the bird-borne way Hogwarts students receive letters from home.
Rowling’s letter also talks a bit about what she has been up to lately and closes by saying, “I often reflect on how fortunate I am to have made connections with so many wonderful people; hearing about someone like you is among the greatest rewards of writing.”
While it’s not exactly a hand-written invitation for tea and it’s hard to determine if the signature on the bottom is genuine or a reproduction, the gesture was nonetheless well-received by both Rhein and me. (After all, I’ve already admitted to abandoning my objectivity regarding this story.)
Rhein, who hasn’t had a lot of good news lately as she continues her struggle with a rare form of appendix cancer, said she is excited to have Rowling’s autograph and loved the part of the letter in which she talked of her work on new books due to her “need to invent stories remaining undiminished.”
“I found her ongoing efforts encouraging to me to keep on trying to create, to write, to dream despite all the challenges I face,” Rhein said.
Naturally but unnecessarily, Rhein also thanked me for my part in helping her make the connection, but really I’m the one who should be thanking her for once again serving as an inspiration as she handles adversity with courage, dignity and grace.

P.S. Our hearts and prayers go out to Dianne Rhein!

IT’S often said that everyone has a book inside them. A quick glance online shows there are plenty of frustrated writers out there who feel they have a novel just waiting to burst out. They pursue their dreams by penning blogs or paying for expensive courses promising to get them published.

Perhaps we should blame J.K. Rowling. Her story seems to inspire millions of “undiscovered” writers. One minute she’s a single mum scribbling about imaginary wizards in an Edinburgh café, the next she’s a multi-millionaire author whose Harry Potter books became the defining literary event of the century.

Sadly, most wannabe writers can’t magic her success out of thin air. For everyone J.K. Rowling, there are thousands of others who find putting pen to paper (or more likely finger to keyboard) isn’t a fast-track to fame and fortune.

I found this very fascinating article about a Rabbi who uses Harry to teach valuable life lesson. I just had to share this with, you guys. This just proves the fact that Jo has indeed changed the world in so many ways and how Harry will live on forever!

When the Hogwarts Express rolled to the end of its enchanting line, Rabbi Moshe Rosenberg was perhaps one of the more unlikely fans who mourned the conclusion of the series about the boy wizard.

Rosenberg became hooked on the Harry Potter books about a decade ago, when the sixth-grade students at his yeshiva were reading the first book.

He has since been dubbed “The Harry Potter rabbi” by congregants at his Kew Gardens Hills synagogue, Congregation Etz Chaim, and the Bronx yeshiva where he teaches, the SAR Academy in Riverdale.

The Potterphile has utilized the series in his classroom and synagogue to teach Jewish values. And his book “Morality for Muggles: Ethics in the Bible and the World of Harry Potter” was published last month.

Author J.K. Rowling’s books are valuable, Rosenberg said, because they deal with all of life’s most essential questions.

“What gives life meaning? How do relationships work? What’s the interplay between good and evil and what are our obligations in that struggle?” he said. “All of these things are dealt with in the Bible as well.”

He compares the relationship between Harry, Hermione and Ron to the biblical trio of Moses, Miriam and Aaron. Both trios are marked by loyalty and heroism, as well as overcoming petty jealousies. One of his homework assignments was an essay exploring Jewish themes in the Potter stories.

In his book, Rosenberg demonstrates how popular literature can be utilized to examine ethical issues, from coping with loss to affirming human dignity.

Rosenberg regularly brought up the connections between Judaism and the Potter series in classroom discussions. He also created a Harry Potter Club, which encouraged his students to write their own sequels to the Potter series between Rowling’s releases of the volumes. In addition, he organized Quidditch games in the gym and took the students to see the Potter movies when they premiered in theaters.

In earlier eras, rabbis offered parables about horses and wagon drivers that resonated with the people of that time, Rosenberg said. The Potter books gave him a common language with his students, who are too young to appreciate the pop-culture references he was most familiar with – from Star Trek.

“It is a shame the [Potter] books have come to an end,” he lamented. “You can do the same sort of thing with other literature, but Harry Potter has so much that’s positive it’s hard to find something quite as rich. We’ll have to keep our eyes open.”

That is right–you could be the proud owner of the home JK Rowling grew up in for a mere $343,000.

Rowling is known for her incredible plot twists, undeniable character development, and fascinating creation of a wizard world that has captured the hearts and minds of children to adults across the globe. But exactly where did Rowling obtain her inspiration to create such a great book series? There is no doubt that her Gothic-style childhood home, complete with attractive architecture and located on the border of Wales, greatly inspired her to dream big and create a fictional wizard world that has made her well-known across the world.

For example, one of the most loved parts of Harry Potter includes the Quidditch tournaments, a unique sport that includes seven players on each team. One of the teams is known as the Tutshill Tornadoes. Surely, this is just another creative name created by Rowling, a particular skill that can be identified in every book? Wrong—Tutshill is actually the name of the village that Rowling grew up in and where this fantastic home is located.

With an incredibly realistic price, I doubt this home will remain on the market very long. Harry Potter fans across the globe are probably keeping a keen eye on the home and are waiting for the prime time to make an offer and relish in the environment that Rowling herself grew up in. Imagine reading Harry Potter while being surrounded by the incredible views and astonishing architecture that inspired the creation of these world-renowned books.
